Three things to change first
- Match the contract index. Where the purchase order or specification dictates a section structure, that structure wins. Align the template to it before a single record is filed.
- Set the traceability rule. Every line must tie a record to a physical item — heat, weld, tag or serial number. Broken traceability is the most common reason a data book is rejected.
- Decide the sign-off authority. Name who reviews and who accepts each section, and mirror the hold and witness points already defined in the ITP.

What is an MRB index?
The MRB index is the controlled contents register at the front of a Manufacturing Record Book. It lists every required record by section, with its document number, revision, date and status, so a reviewer can see at a glance what evidence exists and what is still outstanding.
Is this MRB template free to use commercially?

What format is the MRB index template in?

How many sections should an MRB have?
There is no universal number. Ten sections covering general information, quality plans, materials, fabrication and welding, inspection and NDT, testing, surface protection, nonconformance, preservation and shipping, and close-out suit most fabricated equipment packages. The contractual index always takes precedence.
When should the MRB index be agreed?
At contract award, before fabrication begins. Agreeing the index, numbering and file format up front is the single most effective way to avoid a rejected data book at handover.
